Huila, located in southwestern Colombia between the Central and Eastern Andes, is one of the country’s most distinctive coffee regions due to its diverse elevations, terroir, climate, and harvest cycles. Despite producing nearly 20% of Colombia’s coffee, 80% of Huila’s farmers cultivate less than three hectares.
Among them is Dionel Chilito Lopez, who manages La Pradera, a 10-hectare farm with 3 hectares dedicated to coffee. Coming from a coffee-growing family, Dionel began with 2,000 Caturra trees gifted by his father and has since transitioned to Gesha, achieving excellent results. Colombia is renowned for its Washed coffees, typically processed by picking ripe cherries, depulping the same day, fermenting for 12–36 hours, washing off mucilage, and drying on patios, in parabolic or solar dryers, or mechanically; some use mechanical demucilagers.
